Self-Ligating Braces:

Self-Ligating Braces Self-ligating braces use brackets that do not need the little o-shaped rubber bands (ligatures) or metal tie wires to hold the arch wire onto the bracket. The brackets are made to hold onto the arch wire by themselves. Some types use doors or hinges while others use clips to hold the wire.

Some manufactures of self-ligating brackets claim that their design reduces friction between the arch wire and the bracket. Less friction means that the braces may work faster resulting in shorter treatment time and longer time between visits to the orthodontist.

There are several brands of self-ligating braces, for example the Damon System, In-Ovation-R, SmartClips, and the SPEED System.
